So I logged into deviantART today and amongst the 300 new deviations/messages in my inbox, i find this...

Oh wow, I really wanted to see this...
So i followed the link to find:

My drawing of a Stud Muffin from aaaages back in 2006.
It is unfortunately the most popular image in my deviantART gallery.

Out of all my images, why steal this one? And use such a low-res copy of it at that.
I don't know what to feel. Flattered? Frustrated? I'm not really angry at all. I just think it's kind of silly. This piece doesn't fit in that person's gallery at all. It's just kind of odd. This should be seen as a lesson though, to be more careful of work that you post on the internet, because you can't always keep track of what happens to it.
This stolen piece was posted over a year ago in someone else's gallery and I had no idea at all. Although this drawing sucks ass now, it does have sentimental value to me because I was inspired by a friend to draw it... What annoys me the most is what the art thief says about giving a 'new meaning' to the phrase 'stud muffin' or whatever. No, you didn't! You didn't use your brain at all...

Anyways, I reported the deviation.
Now I just have to wait and see what happens!

I love this cutscene which features cameos of some aeons/eidolons from the ff franchise that you don't get to play as in ffxiii.

I was meant to blog this a couple days ago, but as per usual time has eluded me once again.

We had our end of semester presentations on Wednesday where we had to exhibit the progress we'd made during the semester... Uhh, I don't know when I became so terrified of public speaking! I wasn't like this in high school, only now in uni I dread class presentations and pretty much anything to do with talking about our work. -__-

Had I known that this presentation was worth 75% of our grade for the semester, I probably would have tried a little harder... To be honest I was already in holiday mode, spending all my time catching up on Gossip Girl and Modern Family, LOL.

But I did spend a little time making a giant panda out of sand paper!

Its chest opens up and there's a baby inside! :D

Anyway, I stuttered SO MUCH during the presentation and there were a lot of silent pauses which I absolutely dread. Why can't I be more eloquent in my speech? >< I should have written a monologue instead of winging it, but I enjoyed the presentations at AGideas where they just talked to us instead of reading a long-winded speech so much more. I don't know... Well, it's over now. I just have to do better next time!!

From our fail of a year that was 2009 (Semipermanent and Manifest), 2010 has been one of actually DOING things that we've set out to! First it was AGIdeas, and now Doujicon! (DODGYCON) YAY! :D

So we (SLOTH CREW, not itchy baby sloth?) attended doujicon this past Saturday as traders!
We'd been talking about it for so long, but as the last-minute designers we are, the amount of stuff we managed to produce was pretty limited.

The tables were unexpectedly small, but that was okay since we didn't have that much stuff to display anyway.
I only got around to making some badges and bookmarks, and not all my badges were made. There were a few that I thought would sell that I didn't get to make (Mario chomp & Ponyo ;___;). Damn last minute-ness (Sticky closed at 6PM the night before, and we got there at around 5:40 LOL, so I only managed to make 30? And I screwed up 3 of them.)

Did I also mention we were strangely the only ones there selling fanart?

A bad point of the con was the SMELL, zomg... Jen wasn't kidding when she said these kinds of events have a distinct musk.

And what was with all these giant tentacles everywhere?...

Sales-wise, I think I did better than I thought I would, but my expectations weren't that high, yay for the pessimist attitude :). It was a really good feeling when people bought my stuff. A big thankyou to anyone who bought things from our table!!
May and I also did our first collab commission! It was kinda stressful, but fun! It was also weird for me to be hand drawing stuff, since I REALLY can't draw things by hand. (I might do a post on this issue later.)
We had quite a few slow periods of the day, but I think it was a good experience for our first con!

Towards the end of the day, things got REALLY slow, so we decided to do this...

But still nobody wanted our stuff.

AGIdeas: DAY 2

The second instalment of AGIdeas started at 10am, so I had time to eat!
A Maccas Bacon & Egg McMuffin and Hash Brown + a Krispy Kreme's hot chocolate to wash it all down. (Orh, three different ways to type 'and' in one sentence) Best fatty breakfast ever!

Kinetic Sculptor

First up, we had an international speaker. Woohoo! From the previous day, I learnt that I really enjoyed the international speakers. Something about their accents maybe? Makes then kind of endearing to listen to.

This was another one of those moments where the speaker came on and I didn't expect much, but then by the end of it I was totally blown away by how awesome they are. This guy makes these crazy creatures out of electrical wire casing that are able to move on their own using the power of physics. They are FREAKING INCREDIBLE! The way they move is so beautiful, I know that sounds weird, but I swear when you see it, it's amazing. AMAZING!
The highlight of the presentation was the mini creature Theo Jansen brought along (I totally want one) and when the sound for one of the videos wasn't working and he did the sound effects himself, oh and when he got Ken Cato on stage to do a live demonstration for how his creatures work, oh and his concluding words were hilarious! (Wow, there were a lot of highlights!)
Basically, he was trying to do this build-up to a supposed 'golden phrase' But mid-way he got a bit confused... saying things like "to all those that are NOT creative out there, stop trying to be creative, because you're NOT" LOLOL!! He kind of forgot what he was going to say, so he was just like, "ok, that's all" and walked off the stage, it was hilarious!!
This one was a bit crazy, but so SO entertaining!

Yeah, sorry man... Theo Jansen's a tough act to follow. But, this motion graphics presentation was still really interesting. He did work for National Geographic, which was really nice! Uhhmm... This was a really good presentation, but I really can't remember what else happened. Maybe because of the next speaker...

Yeah, nice segue!
I didn't think a court artist would be that interesting to listen to. But this lady was SO FUNNY! At the start she kept complaining about the white highlights in her work that she didn't like, and that she couldn't use watercolours in court because she'd make a mess. LOL! Then she started getting to the stories of court cases, and probably told us A LOT OF THINGS SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE. "Everybody knows him. He used to be Naomi Robsin's boyfriend." LOLs. She even told us about when she got arrested. Too bad she ran out of time, "oh, time's up, bye!" She was so cute! And she probably had heaps more interesting stories.

This was pretty good, uhmm... This lady obviously went over her speech many times. She spoke clearly and her sentences were very eloquent, so she got a lot of quotes in the daily re-cap. LOL. Yeah, some of the imagery was really nice, like the paper-leafy interior and the baroque-style interior too.

This duo of kiwis were really cool. Their work is hi-tech to the extreme! They showed a few of the websites they've done for clients, and they're all really beautiful! Really nice motion-i-ness. (LOL, I think I've run out of word power now. I've been typing since 11AM this morning OTL...) They also showed pictures of their 'studio' which looked more like a geeky lan party, and also other random images, fat guy doing a jump-kick and his jeans splitting at the crotch (uuugh) and a guy dressed as a centaur trying to take a wizz in a porta-potty. LOL

I liked Ghostpatrol's presentation, even though it was a little, mm.. messy? He kind of reminds me of my brother. It was kind of reassuring to hear him say he can't do realism (I can't either, yay!). His work pretty much speaks for itself, it's really simple, but you can see the narrative and thought behind it, I think. Ghostpatrol is one of those people that expresses himself better with a pen and paper, than with words, and I totally get that.

Dan Formorsa - Smart Design (USA) ☺☺☺
Product Design

And now, here is a person who is probably better with words, than pen and paper. This guy was a really engaging speaker. This Smart Design presentation was pretty inspirational. Too bad I don't make products. There is a lot of research and consideration that goes in to these products that I'm in awe of. They really work!

I'm so SORRY, but it makes me really sleepy when people just read a script they've written to last 30 minutes, and have no interactivity with the images on screen.

OH WAKE UP NOW... THIS GUY IS SPANISH, WON'T STOP DANCING AND HAS AN AWESOME ACCENT.
I think this could have been my favourite presentation of AGIdeas... This guy's illustration skills are FREAKING AMAZING! The backgrounds he drew for Chico & Rita are impeccable!! I think I loved every minute of this presentation, and didn't know where to look... At the screen at all the beautiful images or at the speaker who kept on dancing and singing throughout the whole presentation! He showed us the development for the film, going through the setting and characters and the music. ANd also this amazing car chase seen.
I wonder when I'll be able to see this film?

Day 2 of AGIdeas also included the collection of the AGIdeas, 500+ page 20th anniversary celebration book. OMG, 2kg of pure awesome! Too bad it's still at my brother's house. I wonder when I will get to look at it again...

So, I spent last week away in the city attending AGIdeas (yes, I finally went)

Wow, what can I say, it really was amazing and totally worth the $300 like Sarah Jenkins –who no one would believe– told us in first year. You know, she totally should have taken a different approach in convincing us to go, rather than yelling at us and telling us how disappointed she is and blah blah blah. But I guess, in retrospect I probably wouldn't have listened to her anyway, damn ignorant first year me, I'd rather eat my $300 than give it to her...

Anyways, I totally planned to blog this nightly during the conference, but everyone knows what happens to the things i plan! I've also been non-stop drawing stuff for doujicon since I've been back home. Can it be, I've been inspired?
So let's start from the beginning...

My very first day of AGIdeas, EVER!
I was pretty excited, but still wasn't able to wake up early enough and ended up running late and skipping breakfast (NOOO). Oh, my poor brains.

So they gave us an introduction to the event and made us stand for Ken Kato's entrance, which was... (dot dot dot)
Anyway, I'm going to copy Jen's format and go though each speaker individually :D Throughout AGIdeas, I created a marking scheme, of putting happy/not-so-happy/sleepy/sad faces next to the names of the speakers I enjoyed/not-so-enjoyed. I can't get as many expressions on my blog, but I'll do my best to replicate it. I also noticed a lot of the designers showed their pet cats (do I have to get a cat to be successful!?) so I'm going to try and remember who had cats and do a cat count. LOL

Michael Mabry (USA) ☺☺
Design & Illustration

LOL at the opening clip of paper-cut-out celebrities!

He was a really great opening speaker, really easy to listen to, and damn cool illustrations! I absolutely looooved all the work he does/did for Land of Nod. He also showed us the process of how he created the dancing flower image, which was really interesting! His artwork looks very digital, but in fact it's mostly traditional. Only the layout was done digitally, if I remember correctly.

He also ended with a clip showing 'backstage footage' of his opening clip which was a really nice conclusion.
Thumbs up for the first speaker. YAY!

Wow, the chief designer of Holden. I generally don't have that much interest in cars, but this guy made cars so interesting! He was really entertaining, and made a lot of jokes containing sexual innuendo. My favourite bit of his presentation was when he showed China's plagarised cars, it was pretty LOL. The fat ladies, was that real?

Eamo Donnelly (AUS) ☺☺
Illustration

Oh maaan. This guy has AMAZING illustration skills!! I absolutely looove the colour palette that he uses and how he is able to fit SO MUCH STUFF into an image!
He talked about his background, upbringing and lifestyle now as an illustrator. He said that it's a really hard industry to survive in, it's really isolating and and he lives every week out of his inbox, which is very scary! He's so talented and it's still so hard. What about me!?
As he spoke though, he had all his images scrolling past on the projection and he had to pause a lot to wait for the image he was talking about to come up. It was very pecha kucha! LOL!

Dylan Brady - Studio 505 (AUS) ☹
Architecture

Gene wasn't kidding when he said that architects like to waffle on for ages (which is why they invented pecha kucha!) Well, I didn't mind listening to him speak, he talked a lot about these patterns he worked on for the exterior of this building in China. I lost count how many times they completed the design and then had to start again.
He made this comment though, which set Jen off. You can read on her blog XD

Robyn Beeche (AUS) ☹
Photography

A photography lady that lives in India. Errr... I don't remember much from this presentation. Maybe that architect really wore me out. I remember, she talked about lighting and make-up and something and then Vivienne Westwood!... Oh man, I feel so bad! I'm sorry!

Ali Vazirian (IRAN) ☹
Lyric & Religious Design

I feel bad for not understanding most of this presentation. I really tried, but I struggled! Maybe because lunch was so close and I hadn't eaten anything, my brain had stopped working.
Although I didn't really get it, some of the imagery he showed was really beautiful -How the letters(?) of the Persian language turned into these interlocking shapes, and something something.

Jacques Reymond (AUS) ☺☺☺
Food Design

Oh man, I'm so glad they put this guy on AFTER lunch!!
Jacques Reymond IS ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS! He has the most awesome accent! I loved hearing his life story! He made all the dull and sad moments, sound so exciting! My favourite line was when he said his wife wanted to kill him. I don't know why that was so funny, but it totally was.
You can really tell he's passionate about his food and the 'design' of it.

What a cool guy.

Annabel Dundas - TILT (UK) ☺
Motion Graphics

This was a really nice presentation too! It was all motion graphics which meant there was plenty of moving colours and shiny things! They did a lot of work for FIFA, which was all really pretty. My favourite was the motion graphics done for the 24hour panda channel in some Asian country (Thailand?) it was colourful and cute :)
She also showed us her personal designer chair collection. There was one that I liked, but I forget now. It was a chair that looked like something... >.>

Dean Poole - Alt Group (NZ) ☺☺☺
Graphic Design

When this kiwi first stepped on stage and started talking, I really didn't expect much... But man was I wrong. This was one of the most amazing presentations EVER! I can't even find words to describe it. You just had to be there... The work that Alt Group does is really something. Their concepts are brilliant and the execution is spot on. The way Dean Poole spoke about their work was really funny, he was just so laid back about it all and said 'yeah, we made some birds and then just decided to melt them.' He talked about stuff like it was all random and blah, but when we were shown the things he designed you could see the amount thought that was behind it. Really, wow.
He also showed all these random things.

"This is a coat-hanger, they're pretty cool."
I donno, he just made all these mundane things so entertaining! And he also gave everyone free eyeball badges! YAY!
So simple, yet so COOOOOL!!

Andrew Rogers (AUS) ☺
Sculptor

This guy didn't spend much that time talking to us. He mainly showed us videos of the assemblage of his sculptures. He worked in these kind of desolate areas and gathered locals to help him build giant sculptures of out local materials. It was pretty interesting and the final products were actually quite beautiful.

Nicola Cerini (AUS) ☺
Textiles

Actually, the one designer I knew of before AGIdeas (I know, I'm oblivious to the design world). We sell mugs with her designs on it at the shop, and I maybe vaguely vaguely remember seeing her handbags at gift fairs (I could totally totally be lying here).
Yeah, she did a run through of how she got into textiles and subsequently started her own range of products. She also talked about the bad times (which always scares me) and how she got back up and continued on.
Why do people always have to fail to succeed? Can I have the latter without the former? LOL

Poster Artist

The last speaker of day 1 - A former drummer of a rock and roll band, turned poster artist! (He still looks like a rockstar, LOL!)
Actually, the free gift of the day was a poster by this artist. YAY!
He showed us a lot a lot of his work. My favourites were his vegetable things. I remember he said some entertaining things, but by this time I was totally deaded.

The first day was pretty damn amazing, and to think this has been going on for 20 years now! Nineteen years of missing out, DAMN. Oh man, you know I could have gone to every single AGIdeas if I weren't so clueless! (Not that I would have remembered the first 6, or enjoyed the next maybe 10?)

Uuuuhm, oh yeah I haven't mentioned the lunch we had yet, it was complimentary and at the NGV (on a Tuesday).
I really think they should have given us lunch on two days, rather than splurging and giving everyone a fat piece of salmon in a lunchbox. It was the coolest thing ever, except I don't eat raw fish, tomatoes, olives and I don't drink soda water and I like brown lamingtons, not pink ones, not that I'm complaining. I was riveted we got food! But I'm pretty sure a majority of people ended up wasting the food that day. I really tried to eat it, but I couldn't!! ;___;
I ate the pink lamington though, that was a feat.

I also bought my first issue of UPPERCASE

Surprisingly, I had one of the best days at uni today! :D

The moon has been pretty round the last couple days, I must be having a small bout of good luck! XD I swear it's not a coincidence!! It's happened too many times!

It started yesterday, when I woke up, logged onto facebook to find the deadline for the essay –I've been so very much struggling to write– had been extended ONE WEEK. I can't describe for freaking delighted I was yesterday morning. I was so happy that I got my nephew and we started dancing! LOL! It was seriously THAT good.

I relaxed for the rest of the day wasting time playing DS and watching One Piece, my newest addiction since Cafe World, which I by the way have now stopped playing.

I ended up keeping my 50's diner/drive-thru cafe, although I was really tempted to do it up in all their new 'Sugar Rush' items.
Man, this game was really addictive...

Last night, I also went to Officeworks to print out a poster, only to find that my local Officeworks totally leveled up! They got all new shelving and this new section with all this nice stationery nicely laid out. But best of all, they got ALL NEW PRINTERS. They got these awesome new large format colour printers!!
I went in only expecting to get a kind of dodgy blown-up black and white photocopy of my poster, but ended up getting a really nice A2 colour print-out! The lady that served me was also really really nice and the prices are definitely reasonable!

Uuuh, I'm getting a little off topic, I'm meant to be talking about what happened today! XD

Umm, what was it again?
Right! Today... the traffic was really good because it's school holidays! YAY! I left home 5 minutes late, but got to uni 20 minutes early! AMAZING!
Anyways, today we were given the task to decorate the design building corridors and get people to interact/think about the things we put up.

My idea was to print out cute characters and get people to draw on them and make them gross, which ties in with my project proposal. I drew four different characters and printed them onto blinding fluro paper.

I think the bear is my favourite :)

A couple kids from class helped me out in making example drawings to put up. It was really fun watch them draw and transform the characters! XD

Jen and I did a collab kind of thing since our projects are similar. She ever so kindly helped me pin up the pictures on the pinboards in the corridor, and decorated it with tinsel and beads. We were a little disappointed that we weren't allowed to stick things on the walls though. We didn't realise we only had the small column pinboards adjacent to the studio doors to pin up work on. I even went and bought a whole thing of blu-tack! Doh!
Later on we also decided to make paper-chains for decorations and pinned them up too! Oh and the pens! towards the end of the class, everyone was madly tying string to pens and pinning them up on the boards! Thankyou to everyone who gave me supplies for that!! Much appreciated! :)

Not long after I pinned up my pictures people started drawing on them! As expected, one of my characters ended up covered in penises >.> and another one got a lipstick mark to the crotch! Geez design kids! Jen said it's probably a build up of suppressed sexual frustrations, so they're venting on my characters. Hm, fair enough...

Haha, anyways I'm pretty excited to see how my characters end up after Easter break!

Although I'm not exactly satisfied with the final outcome, I did learn A LOT from attempting an image like this.

Haha, nah... It was okay. It just took a long time. Actually, this isn't even an assessment task, so I don't know why I spent so long on it. Probably trying to avoid writing my theory essay which is due in 5 days. OTL

In class the other day, I added in this instructions panel at the start.
You scroll to the right to reveal the background.

Initially, I had all the characters listed and when you roll over their names, a picture of them would pop-up. (well, that's what I had planned.)

But then I decided to just give each of them a polaroid and when you roll-over it, they'll move and play their corresponding sounds.

Then I also added in little speech bubbles that appear that give cryptic hints to where they are hiding.
Each speech bubble, and names on the polaroids are also written in handwriting I thought each character would encompass.

Eugene 'SEA so sleepy'
--> Eugene is sleeping by the sea.

Egbert 'NOT A TOMATO'
--> Egbert is hiding behind a stack of vegetables, which a tomato is NOT.
--> And also a homage to this year's graduating multimedia class XD

Phyllis 'Hehehe ACHOO!'
--> Phyllis' SFX is a giggle, hence 'hehehe'
--> The ACHOO (sneeze) is reference to the pepper grinder she is hidden behind.

Pattie 'Just resting my eyes'
--> Well, you don't really have to try to find her.

Marie '1 UP'
--> When scrolling, Marie is the first dinosaur and also UP in a tree.
--> Also reference to video games! XD

So as you know, my interactive narrative is a hide and seek game. (yeah, finally finalised! XD)
So I've been working on getting my characters to appear from behind things, using button rollovers.

Quick sketches of the new characters from class

I think I'll have 5 characters, including Eugene, it seems like a good number >.>

So first we have Eugene, a Triceratops made of salami, who is like the dopey leader of the group that just wants to play and stare at the sun or whatever...

This is Marie, a Pterodactyl made out of cheese. I'm thinking because she's small she'd be the timid, shy type.

This one is Pattie, a veggie burger Brontosaurus. She's very grounded, zen and monk-like. I guess she's the calm one of the group.

These two are fraternal twin T-Rexs. The older brother Egbert is made of Eggplant and the younger sister Phyllis is made of Beet-root. Egbert is the Ace of the group, he's actually kind of smart and always wonders why he is always being dragged around by Eugene and made to join the group's wacky antics. Phyllis is very different to Egbert, she likes to play with all the others and is the girly-girl type.

There we go, my highly unoriginal characters with stereotypical personalities and no depth whatsoever! :D

I had a look at the main characters from 'The Land Before Time' for inspiration for my own characters.

Littlefoot the Apatosaurus

He is adventurous, contemplative and quiet, though he enjoys playing, and often becomes leader in any quest. Littlefoot is very caring of his friends, and acts as both their leader and the voice of guidance among them.

Cera the Triceratops

Cera tries her best to show no fear, often bragging about her accomplishments and courage. She has difficulty showing weakness, a trait that her father has largely ingrained in her.

Ducky the Parasaurolophus

Ducky has a mother and father, thirteen biological siblings, and an adopted brother named Spike. The character is sweet, caring and innocent, and tries to make peace during group conflicts, but is also very naive.

Petrie the Pteranodon

He is talkative, but speaks in a broken English, usually omitting linking verbs (is, are, am) using "me" in place of "I", and referring to himself in third person. Petrie panics easily, but still often tries to exercise his bravery. If his friends need help, the character usually pulls through for them.

Spike the Stegasaurus

Spike was orphaned as an egg, he rarely speaks, although he has articulated on a few occasions, mumbles on many others. It is revealed that he is silent for two reasons, one, in order to hear the plants around him "sing", before deciding whether or not to eat them, and two, in order to avoid arguing with others.

Chomper the Tyrannosaurus

Chomper is very out-going and friendly. Due to the dietary habits of his species, he often has clashes with other characters, but always tries to come to peaceful terms with them.

Ruby the Oviraptor

Ruby is often the voice of wisdom among the young dinosaurs, able to explain matters the others do not understand. She is calm, kind and sympathetic.

I like how they all have really distinct characteristics.
I most probably won't be able to create such in-depth characters with novel-length back-stories... but yeaah, it's just good to have a look at

Thinking about the interactive narrative, I was reminded of these games from my childhood.
Does anyone remember these?

LIVING BOOKS!!
For those who don't know, they're like virtual picture story books. You'd buy them as CDs and there were all different stories... Eeeh, it's kind of hard to explain, but each page was illustrated and you could click around in the pictures and things would happen...
The one I remember most vividly was one where this hamster creature went to the beach with his grandma, and there were all these umbrellas lined up along the coast and when you clicked on them they would shoot into the sky and never return, they were SO COOL.

I think I had three or four of them... I had some with Arthur in them! ARTHUR!!
Orrh, I just looked on wiki, and I had these ones:

I'm thinking of doing a sort of Hide and Seek clicky thing for my interactive narrative.

I remember watching Dora the Explorer aaages ago, and there was this segment where she needed to find things and they'd click on hotspots and stuff would appear from inside a tree or whatever... I can't find a clip of it though :\ but that was kind of what I wanted to do...

This is some other kids show that has hide and seek in it... but not really what i wanted... >.>

This time, for the background I wanted to try an in-land scene with houses and buildings and such.
I have no idea what this is from... but something like this plus all the savoury stuff.

I changed the foreground, and everything in the background moves a little bit – the ocean and objects floating in the water etc.

I haven't updated in a while... :\ Uni is SO busy this semester!!

This time, I have some really nice animations to show! :D

The first one is...
The short Nike Ad 'Onwards'
Directed by James Jarvis and Richard Kenworthy of Shynola

This animation is interesting because it's done in 3D, but made to look hand-drawn. I love how line is used to create shadow and texture, especially in the more detailed backgrounds and the rain scene. It's really simple but so effective. The main character also has a very smooth run cycle! XD

The background illustrations are SOOO beautiful! There's a really nice mix of collage, painterly style imagery and sleek vectored illustrations. The little bunny character is really cute too! Although it kind of reminds me of the rabbit-thingies from 'Rayman and the Raving Rabbids.' There's also some nice parallax scrolling going on in some parts. :)

It's quite creepy, but I love the use of colours in this animation! Using a very minimal colour palette, generally with about three colours at a time, there's a real sense of darkness and and atmosphere. I love how much the white seems to stand out and glow. Some YouTubed walk cycles for the next brief – Walkcycle

I really like this SkunkFu one! You can see so much personality just from this walk. It's really well done.

This one is really cute. I love the character design!! (My dinosaur has the same eyes!)
This one also has a more similar (bad english -__-) personality to my dinosaur, maybe a bit more bouncy... But yeah.
I also like how the head moves from side to side, although I think that is kind of hard to do with my dinosaur, if I were to attempt it.

Next we have some walk cycle studies.
This is a walk cycle drawn frame by frame. I think it's a good reference... A kind of walk with a swagger.

I know this one is really short, but I wanted to put it here because this is a walkcycle of a possible character with no knees (and no arms.) Eugeneasaurus has no knees

Exhibitioning

May, Steph and I went exhibitioning today! :)
It was very cultural and designer-student-like. Hahaha.

First we went to see the Len Lye exhibition at ACMI.

It was really cool, but all the flashing colours mixed with dim lighting were kind of hypnotic. One of his kinetic sculptures called 'Grass' was especially mesmerising. It was pretty much a panel of thin metal rods that would sway slowly like grass in the breeze. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside the exhibition, but we did take a couple pictures with this screen that previewed a few of Len Lye's films.

We have to write a review of the exhibition for theory, so I'll probably be going back in the near future.

From there, we went to have a look at the Rock, Paper, Lasers exhibition at Kick Gallery :D :D

I love anything made out of paper! Paper is the best!
And these were freakin awesome!... If only I could cut paper like a laser...

Next up is Multimedia... (Man, I can't wait until this week is over.)
This time, I'll be posting images with illustration styles that i like.

First up are some illustrations by Matthew Scott
I like how his artwork seems so effortless. His characters are really simple but they all have such personality, and sometimes in backgrounds there's actually a lot of intricate linework. His colour palettes are also really nice.

Next we have some of Chris “Elio” Eliopoulos' work
Now, everyone knows I'm a fan of collage and Chris Eliopoulos does just that! His collage work, however is done with inks rather than using coloured paper. By using coloured inks, it adds texture and more depth to his art work, and his colour palettes are more controlled. He also does really nice line-art illustrations too!

Ok, I KNOW this post is long, but I'm totally into long posts right now.
Last one, i promise!

Finally, we have one of my favourite webcomic artists. Nedroid!
O.M.G. This guy is hilarious!! And sometimes he collabs with another of my favourite artists Emmy Cicierega. SO cool.
Anyway, his comic may not look like the ultimate awesome work of art, but his characters are, well, really well characterised. The two main characters have a really nice chemistry between them, which is why his comics are so good. (Wow, that was a brilliant display of my great english right there -__-)

The mood-board presentation is tomorrow! D:
I've written a little synopsis of our world. I hope it makes sense.

World Synopsis:
Somewhere out there, possibly in a distant parallel universe exists a sandwich floating in space, known as 'Club-saurus.'

Club-saurus is inhabited by two tribes of dinosaurs–the sweet and the savoury. These two tribes, divided by the Great River of Soup, have a mutual understanding and agreement to live in harmony and maintain the Great River, keeping the sweetness and salitness of the river at perefect equilibrium.

However, individuals from each tribe have 'gone off,' revolted by the affiliation of the two tribes. These individuals banded togeether forming a new tribe known as 'the expired'–the bitter dinosaurs, and poisoned The Great River with brussel sprouts, destroying the ultimate balance of sweet and savoury, replacing it with a bitter vulgar poison.

The sweet tribe pinned the blame on the savoury tribe and vice versa, creating a great misunderstanding between the two tribes and bringing rise to an era of destruction and warfare.
Taking advantage of the broken bond between the tribes, the expired began to rein over, with desires of world domination.

While looking around on the net again for some inspiration for our Dinosaur Food World, I came across some of Carl Warner's work, in particular his 'Foodscapes.' He is a London-based photographer who makes and photographs landscapes made of food, which he calls 'Foodscapes.'

The hot air balloons–made of a variety of fruit and vegetables–soar over fields of asparagus, courgettes, beans and corn.

"The scenes are photographed in layers from foreground to background. The process is very time-consuming and the food quickly wilts under the lights. The images can take up to two or three days to build and photograph and then a couple of days retouching and fine-tuning them to blend together all the elements."

After looking at all these food scapes, it also reminded me of Bento Box Art.
Bento is Japanese for a 'single-portion takeout meal.' A traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables as a side dish.

Generally a bento box will look something like this:

We kind of have a bit of a story now for our scary pre-historic food land.
Something about 2 tribes of food dinosaurs on a floating sandwich divided by an awesome river of soup.
And there's dinosaurs that have 'gone off' living in a scary section of the sandwich made of ice-cream and mashed potatoes.
Some battles later something something. Brussel sprouts. YAY!

We were shown quite a few different worlds from classic games and movies in class last week, so I've decided to list a couple of my favourites.

When talking about worlds. The first thing I thought about was definitely:
FINAL FANTASY
From the Final Fantasy franchise, there's so many notable places,
like Midgar (FF7)

and Balamb Garden/Galbadia Gardens (FF8)

but my favourite place is probably Spira (FFX)... I can't really pick a specific spot though, because they're all so memorable for me! I'm too attached to FFX ;___;

This is an illustration of Zanarkand, it was a city in Spira before it was attacked and destroyed by Sin... :( I really liked the architecture of it though.

From FFX, there's also Luca which is a really nice town too.

There's SOOO many other cool places in Spira, but this post will probably get too long and I'll feel too geeky, so I'll leave it there for now. Hahaha

Some other memorable worlds are ones from the Ghibli Universe. In class we were shown Laputa, Castle in the Sky; but my favourite Ghibli film is Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し). The spirit world from that film and the bath house are amazing. I loved the scene when Chihiro is running and all the lights in the street turn on and the spirits start appearing. I also love the train scene.

And finally, although I didn't enjoy Howl's Moving Castle that much (it's too deep for me) I really did enjoy looking at the CRAZILY detailed EVERYTHING! (for lack of better word) Most memorable, is of course the castle itself and Howl's bedroom.

So our first project is a group assignment, in which we have to develop a concept for a fictional world.
Made a group with the buddies and brainstormed some really silly ideas... Hahaha

Somehow we managed to settle on one idea though, which at the moment is:
'A scary pre-historic food land'

For the 'scary/dark' portion, I had a look at some of Gris Grimly's illustrations. He has one of the coolest styles. His work is dark, yet humorous. His illustrations have this kind of effortless sketchy quality, but at the same time, the images are very intricate and detailed. The colour palette is muted and his backgrounds are generally kept quite minimal.

I also had a look at the intro to 'The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy'

Illustration SEM1:09 //Overview

It was the first day back to uni for our last semester today!
Freakin had to wake up before the sun! When I got up this morning it was still night-time and I got to watch the sun rise! I should have taken a picture :/
Hahaha, oh well.
The first week back is always pretty bludgey and it was nice to go to uni and see the faces of all the design kids! :D

So anyway, Ned came into class this morning to ask for a CD collection of all my illustration work from last semester. I kept forgetting to make one during the holidays, and then it completely left my mind until today. So as I'm scanning, resizing and collating my work now, I thought i may as well put them up here too.

i) BACK TO BASICS
Since this was the first project back for 2009 it was relatively simple. We had to pick two words from a lottery–one adjective and one noun–and illustrate it. For mine i picked out the adjective 'grotesque,' to which I thought "greaaaat, my forte" followed by my second thought "i hope my second word is unicorn." Funnily enough, the second word i picked (TOTALLY at random) just so happened to be 'unicorn.'
I always knew i had super powers!

I was pretty satisfied with this illustration, i finished it early (yeah, EARLY) even though i was working like crazy at the shop during this period of time. And it was an image that was kind of out from my cutesy comfort zone.
I also have this thumbnail from my sketchbook that I like.

ii) STRANGE BUT TRUE
For this brief we had to find and illustrate an 'Odd Spot' from The Age. The only restriction was that the illustration had to be contained in a 20cm x 20cm square. Originally we were meant to illustrate TWO 'Odd Spots' using only black and white, but then Ned changed it, because he's cool like that.

A New York man is accused of going fishing in a pet store aquarium, catching a $350 shark and smuggling it out of the shop under his jacket. The shark was found in his home aquarium with a $300 moray eel bought using a stolen credit card.

It was my third attempt at a cut paper collage, and I don't think I liked it as much as the other two that I had done previously. Maybe because the characters aren't cute enough? I did try using tracing paper for the glass enclosure at the back of the shop though. My favourite part of the image is the starfish and the bird in the cage at the back, haha.

iii) BUSHISMS
This was probably the brief that was fulfilled to the highest quality in our class. We had to select 'one of the many hundreds of Bushisms readily found on the internet and illustrate the essence of their miscommunication.' Bushisms are basically really dumb un-thought-out things that former president of the United States, George W. Bush has said.

My forth cut-paper collage. It actually took me a while to figure out the composition for this image. I enjoyed making it, but when I was done with all the vectoring/photoshopping i thought it was a bit cluttered. I got a good mark though. YEAH! hahaha, I also managed to sqeeze May and Milk's names in there :P Oh, and also note the recycled moon character. (From my '08 Bunneh Attack animation.)

iv) FASHION VICTIM
This one was a pretty loose brief. We just had to do a fashiony-styled illustration, relevant to the title 'Fashion Victim.'
I chose to draw a bunch of skinny leggy girls with a lot of bunnies. The bunnies are meant to reflect how trends spread in the fashion industry. You know... like the saying 'breeding like rabbits?'.. er, something like that.

I kind of liked this style, because it was another kind of different image from what I usually do, and i also experimented with colour palettes and yeah, really skinny leggy girls.

v) HEROES, HEDONISTS AND HORRORS OF HISTORY
My other forte, caricature drawing! HA... I was really nervous about this brief...

In the end it turned out okay. You can tell it's Einstein, but I didn't know what media to use and ended up badly photoshopping it... I like it with just the outline. I'm not putting the photoshopped one up because it was TERRIBLE.

vi) ILLUSTRATIVE TYPOGRAPHY
Our final brief from Illustration! We had to pick a couple of words from a headline or something typographical and illustrate. Because this was around the time swine flu had started to come about, I swiftly made up the title "IT'S HERE." Then drew a lot of pigs robots destroying everything...

Actually the first time i vectored this, the power short-circuited and i lost EVERYTHING. I was SO devastated. I think I would have enjoyed this brief more if it wasn't while we also had damn PPR going on. DAMN PPR!! GAAAH! I just remember counting down the number of pigs I had left to vector before I could concentrate on PPR. I only duplicated one or two pig heads! The rest have ALL been drawn individually, so it took a fair amount of time. All the little people are copies though. LOL. If i have time maybe i'll redo the people better. ^^;

Overall, looking at all these illustrations i think I'm satisfied... Well of course there's a lot of improvements that can be made, but you know, that can be said about everything, right?
After '08 illustration, I defiantly didn't think I would enjoy illustration in '09 this much. I was actually kind of sad when it finished!
Anyways, that's it for now, i think this has gone on for long enough!
I just hope to continue to improve, and yeah!

It's got Watanabe Shin'ichirō (the guy that directed Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop) as the music director. I just watched the first episode, and Hana is my new hero! I like her mum too... But the scene where she like beats up her sister, that was so awesome. I wish I was as cool as her!

YESSSS!!! I FINALLY FINISHED IT!!
ZOMG.. Can't believe this thing took 2 hours to render. What the hell? Oh and not to mention, the first time i rendered it, I forgot to check the audio... So I had to do it again. That's 4 HOURS of rendering I had to wait through.

Oh yeah... I stuffed up again when I was exporting the file as an mp4, so now I have one with and without audio... -___-" That's twice now.

Well, since the 'Lions Roar' motion type clip was shown in class, and a couple people have put it on their blogs, i've decided to put the 'We Intertwined' clip on my blog, just to be different!... Even though the Lions Roar one is much better, and this one is incomplete. But i like We Intertwined the song better. And I can play it on piano, maybe?

Anyway, it was weird how a teacher knows one of my favourite bands... usually no one knows anything!!

My favourite bit is when the vines appear, i guess.

This is some of the artwork that I've done for my animation.

Probably my favourite piece is the first shot, of the scientist's castle...

The transition scene is also okay. It took me SO LONG to decide how the city was going to look though... But i think it turned out alright. Favourite bit has to be the bunny with the baseball bat though... what was i thinking?

And then there's this one... Hmm, what to say. He's a cute character, and I'm going to keep drawing him in the future, but for this animation project he was too difficult to animate, because he's pretty detailed... I donno it's kind of hard to explain...

It's because of his high pants that i can't animate him properly -__-

Yay! I love John Su! (I mentioned him briefly in my very first post.) His art is very random and funny, he has some of the most unique characters!
